Sclerotherapy Treatment

A procedure used to treat blood vessel malformations and also used in the treatment of varicose and spider veins. A medicine is injected into the vessels, which makes them shrink.

Affecting a significant portion of adults, particularly women, spider veins and smaller varicose veins are not just cosmetic concerns; for some, they can cause discomfort or other symptoms. Sclerotherapy, a proven medical procedure, has become a gold standard in treating these vein issues. The intervention of a dermatologist in this procedure ensures both efficacy and safety.

Understanding Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that involves injecting a solution, called a sclerosant, into the affected veins. This solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue and fades, eventually being absorbed by the body. The procedure primarily targets spider veins and smaller varicose veins.

Dermatologist’s Role in Sculptra® Treatment

Why Seek a Dermatologist’s Expertise?

1.  Diagnosis and Assessment: Before the treatment, a dermatologist will evaluate the extent and nature of the vein issue, sometimes using ultrasound for deeper veins. This assessment is crucial for deciding the best treatment approach and ensuring that the veins aren’t indicative of a more serious underlying issue.

2.  Precision and Technique:  The success of sclerotherapy largely depends on the accurate injection of the sclerosant. A dermatologist’s knowledge of skin and underlying structures ensures precise targeting, minimizing potential skin damage.

3.  Safety Protocols:  Every medical procedure carries some risks. Dermatologists are trained to recognize and handle complications, ensuring patient safety throughout the procedure.

The Procedure and Aftercare

Sclerotherapy sessions typically last between 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the number of veins treated. The patient might feel slight discomfort or cramps when the solution is injected. After the treatment, compression stockings or bandages might be recommended to maintain pressure on the treated veins.

Patients can usually resume their normal activities the same day but may be advised to avoid strenuous activities for a couple of weeks. Some temporary side effects like redness, bruising, or swelling at the injection site can occur but usually dissipate within a few days.

Efficacy and Results

Post-treatment, the appearance of treated veins typically improves over weeks to months. Most patients experience a 50% to 80% improvement. However, multiple sessions might be required, depending on the severity of the veins. While sclerotherapy doesn’t prevent new veins from forming, regular check-ups with a dermatologist can help manage and treat recurrent issues.

Sclerotherapy stands as an effective solution to the common problem of spider and varicose veins. With the involvement of a dermatologist, patients not only receive a cosmetic solution but also benefit from a holistic approach that prioritizes their overall vascular health. Through expert care and monitoring, patients can confidently stride forward with clearer, more comfortable legs.
